Wecome Vanessa!

I couldn't be more excited that Vanessa has found NAFU and has volunteered to help straighten out our comment problem-- which I didn't know we had until she mentioned it. But we definitely have one. I tried to make a comment myself and got no screen. I'm going to review my settings and see if it's something I've done to block comments somehow.

I've also noted that a fair number of people have recently had the same idea I've had-- that adjuncts need each other, and a voice. On one post I saw elsewhere, the author said that adjunct unions/guilds, etc., were a good idea, but that this was worst time to think of it. I'm not sure that that's true. Surely, this economy is just the right time to figure out how to help each other.

Feedback

I've been talking about the "union" to the powers that be, an they think I ought not to call it a union, but an "association" or a "cooperative" or something that doesn't have baggage with it. Fellow adjuncts I've talked to also feel that I should not have my name on it.

I've got to ask, "What is everyone afraid of?"

Surely, even if we did want to truly establish an AFL-CIO-type union, that should not be something that should scare administrations-- unless, of course, they feel guilty for taking advantage of us for so long. (lol) But, really, this union idea that I have is more like the traditional "student union", only for adjuncts.

Should the name be changed? Should we all contribute anonymously? I don't know.

One week in...

No one, so far, has come to the site or this blog, but I hope some find it soon. I truly believe that we adjuncts need to get together and determine our universal needs. I was thinking today about how much actual money I make; it worked out to $7.44 an hour. Few professionals would work for such a sum. And yet, I do; you do.

I've worked for one of my schools for 14 years-- going on the 15th. Yet, I'm not vested in anything; I have no retirement fund; no health insurance. If we want to keep doing what we do, we've got to find a way to get these things.

First Post

This is the first post on the NAFU blog. I hope it works. I can't figure out how to create a registration section so that others can post-- and me with a Master's in Distance Education. (Go figure!) Ahh... well...

I'm going to try and link the blog to the website. We'll just see how it goes.

Good luck to us all.
